Plastics - degradation / recycling
The determination of the processing degradation index (PDI) is proposed as a tool to quantify the quality of recycled polypropylene with the addition of the stabilizing additive. The higher the amount of stabilizing additive, the lower the PDI of the PP, translating this into a higher quality of the recycled product, however there are studies that show that only up to 0.05% of additive added is enough to obtain an acceptable PDI
The additive levels required to optimize degradation blocking range from 0.050% to 0.60%, the latter being the optimal additive concentration to minimize the Degradation Index to Processability.
There is a methodology and a quantitative tool in making decisions regarding the levels of additive necessary to return to recycled polypropylene a Degradation Index to Processability, which is an important contribution for the plastics sector specifically for the recycling industry, who can use the results to improve the quality of recycled material while minimizing process costs.
