Influence of the segregation of MSW (paper, cardboard and plastic)

The adoption of a system of separation and segregation at the source of materials with market value, mainly those that are better fuels, will certainly contribute to reducing the amount of energy that can be recovered through the controlled incineration process. The calorific value of urban solid waste is gradually reduced as the quantities of paper / cardboard and plastics are previously reduced, providing lower combustion temperatures and combustion process efficiency. Theoretically and considering an efficiency of 28% for a MSW incineration plant, for example the waste of a municipality could generate approximately 156,408 kWh per day without considering segregation, and 117,819 kWh per day when segregation is considered.
